Artificial intelligence in video surveillance – what can it do today?

Künstliche Intelligenz in der Videoüberwachung – was kann sie heute schon?

Video surveillance has undergone impressive developments in recent years. While simple motion detectors or continuous video recording used to be the norm, artificial intelligence (AI) is now enabling entirely new dimensions of security. But what exactly can AI already do in video surveillance—and what is the future?

1. Intelligent object detection instead of simple motion detection

The classic motion detector reacts to everything—from a falling leaf to the neighbor's cat. Modern surveillance cameras with AI, on the other hand, analyze what moves in their field of view in real time. They distinguish between people, vehicles, and animals. The result: significantly fewer false alarms and significantly more relevant notifications.

Example: Our Apollo 2 camera uses AI to specifically detect people – and ignores insects flying past or moving branches.

2. Smart notifications – only when it’s really important

Thanks to AI, cameras can learn which movements are relevant and which aren't. Combined with configurable alarm zones, the user is only notified when movement occurs in a predefined area (e.g., the entrance area).

This means you will no longer receive unnecessary push notifications, but will only be informed about real security events.

3. Automated video analysis & event search

Modern surveillance cameras with AI automatically organize video footage, making it easier to search for relevant events. Recording only starts when actual movement is detected and stops as soon as the movement stops.

This saves only truly relevant scenes, which not only saves storage space but also makes later browsing through recordings much easier. This way, you can find exactly what you're looking for in seconds – instead of sifting through hours of video footage.

4. Data protection and security: What happens to my data?

Many AI-based functions now run directly on the device itself (so-called Edge AI ). This means that analysis takes place locally – without having to upload video data to the cloud. This protects your privacy while reducing internet traffic.

When purchasing, be sure to pay attention to the manufacturer's instructions regarding whether and which data is stored or transmitted.

5. AI in doorbells – the smart home starts at the front door

Smart doorbells also benefit enormously from AI technology: They not only detect that someone is approaching, but also who or what is approaching. A parcel delivery person? A familiar person? Or an animal? Depending on the settings, your home becomes not only safer but also more comfortable.

Conclusion: AI is not a promise of the future – it has long been a reality
