Video Doorbell – Battery vs. Hardwired?

The battery operation of the video doorbell enables quick and easy installation and commissioning. Insert the batteries, mount the video doorbell on the wall and... done!

Battery operation offers several advantages. In contrast to hard wiring, you can freely choose the installation location. For example, it is not necessary to ensure that the existing bell wires are in the right place and can be connected. You can install the video doorbell anywhere as long as there is a WiFi connection. Installation is also much easier than with hardwiring. All you have to do is charge the batteries using the included charging cable. The video doorbell is now ready for use!

The battery life is between 4 and 6 months depending on use and can be recharged within a few hours. Battery operation is the easiest and most convenient way to install and operate your video doorbell.

As an alternative to battery operation, the video doorbell can also be connected to your bell transformer (ProV1: AC 12V-24V / Cardea: AC 12V -24V / DC 12V). The hardwiring is a little more complicated at first because you first have to connect the existing bell wires (bell transformer) to the video doorbell. To do this, you must screw the included clamping shoes onto the mounting plate and then connect the wires to the existing bell wires of the bell transformer.

With a fixed power supply, you don't have to worry about battery life and you can also do without the power saving modes. Due to the fixed power supply, the Cardea video doorbell has a 2K Quad HD camera lens. This is not practical when using battery power because of the higher power consumption. In addition, the hardwired Cardea can forego sleep mode and therefore offers faster connection times. However, you are very limited in your choice of installation location, as you have to install the video doorbell exactly where your doorbell wires are.

Thanks to an included angle, the orientation of the Cardea can be adjusted so that it can be aligned better.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to hardwiring and it is difficult to say across the board which power supply is better. Before purchasing, you should check whether the video doorbell should be operated with a battery or with hardwiring.
